Solutions for Industrial Fume Extraction

Lip extract modules are valuable tools for controlling and extracting toxic and corrosive fumes from chemical dipping and process tanks. Every lip extraction system is unique, and as fume extraction specialists, we have a strong track record in designing, manufacturing, installing, and commissioning bespoke modules for virtually any chemical process tank.

Depending on size and application, the lip extract modules can be manufactured from polypropylene or uPVC with thicknesses ranging from 6mm to 12mm. These materials combine durability, rigidity, and resistance to corrosive environments.

Lip Extraction Systems

Industry-Leading Standards for Safety and Compliance

APMG Plastics can supply stand-alone lip extracts or a complete lip extraction system, including tanks, ductwork, fans and, if required, fume scrubbers. Because we work to the ACGIH Standard for Industrial Ventilation, the HSE HSG258 guidance on Controlling Airbourne Contaminants at Work – Guide to Local Exhaust Ventilation, and the DW/154 manufacturing specification for plastics ductwork from the Heating & Ventilating Contractors Association (HVCA) you can be assured our safety-critical equipment meets the relevant standards and guidance.

Proven Expertise in Lip Extraction Systems

The APMG Plastics team is fully experienced in designing and fabricating lip extraction systems. Our products are all manufactured in our facility in Manchester.

We have successfully completed projects for brass plating lines, chrome plating tanks, pickling baths, motor component anodising, hydrofluoric and nitric acid reduction, and precious materials recovery for, among other companies, The Royal Mint, Fine Tubes, Optimil UK, and many others.

Choosing Lip Extraction System

Choosing the Correct Lip Extraction System for Your Application

Every project is different, and each lip extract module is designed to suit the specific dimensions of the tank it will be attached to, while still maintaining the correct extraction velocities.

Some applications may require a lip extract module on one side of the tank. However, depending on the size of the tank, a lip extract module can be needed on both sides to ensure the correct captor velocity is maintained across the whole surface of the tank. In some cases, a directed airflow may be necessary to ensure the fumes reach the lip extract module for safe extraction.

Push-Pull Lip Extraction System

Push-Pull Lip Extraction System

With large open surface tanks, where contaminant generation occurs across a wide area and the required captor distance cannot be achieved solely with lip extraction, a push-pull system may be appropriate.

The push-pull system adds a manifold, usually a pipe with drilled holes, which directs jets of air across the contaminated emission area. The jet of air captures the contaminant and carries it across to the lip extract module.

Fume Removal from Lip Extraction System

Fume Removal from the Lip Extraction System

Once the extracted air has passed through the rectangular lip extraction module it must be removed. It is pulled into a circular riser duct, typically positioned at the end of the tank system. Each riser duct will be fitted with volume control dampers to assist with balancing the airflow. The air then travels vertically into a main circular header duct before being drawn into the plastic fume extraction fan and discharged to atmosphere.

We fabricate and supply plastic ductwork and a comprehensive range of cost-effective, reliable plastic fans.

Wet Scrubbers for Lip Extraction

Treating Extracted Fumes

Subject to the chemical process, fume scrubbing systems or demister units may be required to control any hazardous contaminant or mist prior to discharge.

APMG Plastics specialises in wet scrubbers and can design and supply a full fume scrubber system if required. Check out our wet scrubbers.

Top Tips When Planning a Lip Extraction System

We’re experts at retrofitting lip extracts to tanks, however, one of the biggest issues we come across is the space to fit the modules to the top flange of the tank. If you are planning a process line with dipping tanks, we recommend future-proofing your design by leaving extra space around the tanks. Ensure that the layout doesn’t position the tanks too closely together, next to walls, or close to other equipment.

What is a Lip Extract Module?

A lip extraction system is a fume extraction method that protects operators and other personnel from toxic and hazardous fumes.

A lip extract module is the initial component in an extract system designed to capture hazardous fumes generally produced by chemical dipping and process tanks. As they are bespoke fabricated items tailored to suit the client’s specific requirements, they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. The lip extract module(s) pull fumes across the tank(s) surface through a series of slots. The fumes are then transported through a ductwork system, into an extract fan unit and expelled to atmosphere. Where the chemical composition of the fumes is deemed too hazardous to expel directly to the atmosphere, a fume scrubber is introduced into the system to neutralise the gases and remove the contaminants.

How Does a Lip Extraction System Work?

Lip extraction systems create a directed airflow across the surface of process tanks, capturing harmful fumes at their source. The extracted air is transported through ductwork to fans or fume scrubbers, where contaminants are neutralised or expelled safely. This ensures a cleaner, safer working environment.

Why Choose APMG Plastics for Lip Extraction Systems?

APMG Plastics combines decades of expertise with a commitment to quality and compliance. Our systems are custom-designed to meet your unique requirements, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
